Loop Current and Deep Eddies

چکیده
In contrast to the Loop Current and rings, much less is known about deep eddies (deeper than 1000 m) of the Gulf of Mexico. In this paper, results from a high-resolution numerical model of the Gulf are analyzed to explain their origin and how they excite topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) that disperse energy to the northern slopes of the Gulf. It is shown that north of Campeche Bank is a fertile ground for the growth of deep cyclones by baroclinic instability of the Loop Current. The cyclones have horizontal (vertical) scales of about 100 km (100

Closed- and Open-loop Deep Brain Stimulation: Methods, Challenges, Current and Future Aspects
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is known as the most effective technique in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson disease (PD) and epilepsy. Relative healing and effective control of disease symptoms are the most significant reasons for the tangible tendency in use and development of this technology. Nevertheless, more cellular and molecular investigations are required ...
متن کاملImpacts of Vertical Resolution on a Numerical Model of the Gulf of Mexico
Numerical high-resolution numerical simulations of the Gulf of Mexico using the Navy Coastal Ocean Model are used to examine the life cycle of Loop Current system including its shed eddies. In particular, the interaction of the anticyclonic Loop Current Eddies with bottom topography is investigated. These energetic baroclinic anticyclonic eddies have depth scales of several hundred meters and a...
متن کاملObserved deep energetic eddies by seamount wake
Despite numerous surface eddies are observed in the ocean, deep eddies (a type of eddies which have no footprints at the sea surface) are much less reported in the literature due to the scarcity of their observation. In this letter, from recently collected current and temperature data by mooring arrays, a deep energetic and baroclinic eddy is detected in the northwestern South China Sea (SCS) w...
متن کاملDeep mesoscale eddies in the Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean
[1] Numerous eddies have been identified in a seven year time series of mooring observations in the Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean. We focus on a series of deep eddies centered at 1200 m depth, and occupying up to 1500 m of the water column. The deep eddies are found to be spatially localized, only ever being observed at one of four mooring sites of the Beaufort Gyre Observing System in the Canada ...
متن کاملEquilibration of Baroclinic Meanders and Deep Eddies in a Gulf Stream - type Jet over a Sloping Bottom
Spatio-temporal evolution of a small localized meander on a Gulf Stream-type baroclinically unstable jet over a topographic slope is investigated numerically using a threedimensional, primitive equation model. An unperturbed jet is prescribed by a potential vorticity front in the upper thermocline overlaying intermediate layers with weak isentropic potential vorticity gradients and a quiscent b...
